Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
Once again, it's time to update the Racked 38, our list of the city's most essential stores. It's impossible to sum up the city's retail scene, but this is our rough guide—a round-up of the places worth browsing whether you're a tourist or a New York City lifer.
We tried to include a range of neighborhoods, price points, and merchandise, leaving out food stores and anything that's been open less than six months. This time around, we're removing Aedes de Venustas, Pat Field, and Moschino—not because they don't each present unique, delightful shopping experiences, but because they're not terribly reflective of where New Yorkers shop now. In their place, we've added two current staples—Rag & Bone and Madewell—as well as Lower East Side newcomer Spiritual America.
Got other suggestions? We're always looking for reader input, especially since we update the list once a quarter. State your cases for (or against) stores in the comments or email the tipline. And don't forget to check out the updated Racked 38s from our sister sites: Racked LA, Racked Chicago, and Racked National.
