Anna Jerström, the designer behind swim line Calavera, doesn't have the background of a beach bum. Born in Sweden, she earned an MBA from Columbia and spent nearly a decade working in finance in New York and London before an epiphany at surf camp in Costa Rica inspired her to quit her job and devote herself to surfing full-time. When she ran into trouble finding a surfing-friendly bikini, she started designing her own, and in 2010 Calavera was born. The suit tops are uniquely secure, while the bottoms are lined with stabilizing material to keep them from sagging. And each suit is tested by female surfers in Costa Rica to make sure it stays on.

Since Jerström is professionally obsessed with surfing gear, we asked her to recommend her favorite New York City surf shops. She came back with a mix of six stores across Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Rockaway Beach. Find them all after the jump.
