Where to Shop For Records In New York City

View as Map

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

We generally abhor the promotion of fake holidays at Racked (April 6th: National Tartan Day; April 15th: National Rubber Eraser Day), but Record Store Day is one we can get behind. Music is good. Vinyl is charming. Tactile is grounding. Shopping is fun.

Thanks in part to the explosive resurgence of vinyl — 12 million units sold in 2015! — New York City has seen a boom in stores offering music in physical formats, a healthy complement to mp3s, streaming service, and internet radio. Here are 20 of the city's best stores to go digging on Record Store Day (Saturday, April 16th this year) or any other day.
