Theory's Latest Sample Sale Is Better Than Expected

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Update: For Saturday, the last day of the sale, all merchandise is an additional 25% off its sale price. Original sale prices are reflected below and in the gallery captions above.

If you took the initiative to clear your schedule today to shop Theory's womenswear sample sale at Chelsea Market, we're going to commend you for thinking ahead. We checked out the discounted clothing just before the doors opened at 10am and found a ton of fall 2015 pieces, plus racks of merchandise in the back to restock throughout the sale. And if you can hold out until Saturday, there will be a price cut before the doors close that day — though the current 70% off discount is really good, too.

Everything is neatly arranged by item and size, ranging from 00 to 12. Along the left side of the room, you'll find tissue-thin tee-shirts and turtlenecks (both $49) in long- and short-sleeved varieties. Just beyond the shirts are two racks of fluted, pencil, and patterned knit skirts ($89), and then an entire row of leather pants in black, navy, beige, burgundy, and brown ($299).

The next row toward the center of the room is full of outerwear for $399, which is marked down from as high as $1,995 in some cases. We spotted suede and leopard calf hair, a parka with a fur hood, and suede fur-lined vests. One row over are silk shirts, both sleeveless and long-sleeved.

Following the tops are sweaters ($109), jackets ($169), and pants ($99) — plenty of pants. Finally, along the back of the room is where you'll find the dresses ($129). Click through the gallery above to see photos of the goods.

The sale is extremely straightforward and well-stocked. There is a communal dressing room in the back by the dresses if you would like to try before you buy. Surprisingly, we didn't see a line as we were leaving right when the doors opened, but we don't expect that to be the case as the day goes on.
