As we inch closer to Barneys in Chelsea's reemergence and opening date — for the record, it's now the second or third week in February — more details are trickling out, this time about what WWD is touting as "global exclusives" that'll be filling the shelves.
Customers will have their pick of the range of products that Barneys has exclusively on either a global, US, or local basis, according to the paper, meaning capsule collections from Elder Statesman, ready-to-wear from Alexander Wang, handbags from Proenza Schouler, and shoe collections from Aquazurra, Valentino, Gianvito Rossi, and Sarah Flint. In some instances, pieces straight off the runways of Lanvin, Givenchy, Balmain, Rick Owens, and Alexander Wang will be on the racks. And because Barneys has thought of everything, there will even been exclusive fragrances.
WWD is also reporting that exclusives are the name of the game for luxury department stores trying to woo both tourists and its devoted customer base away from sample sales and off-price websites. But just in case the merchandise isn't enough, the department store is offering amenities like a barbershop, restaurant, and a beauty basement — features that shoppers will have the opportunity to see for themselves in a few short weeks.
