Update: As of Friday, March 27th, 260 Sample Sale has taken an additional 30% off the lowest price on all items. Original prices are reflected below.
Spring has (nearly) sprung in New York City, but the Vince Camuto sample sale will have you looking forward to fall. On offer at last night's preview were plenty of tall leather and suede boots and booties, with an emphasis on sleek and functional styles, plus a handsome selection of leather purses and satchels (and the occasional clutch) to match, boasting prices of up to 75% off retail.
Camuto's shoes are the indisputable stars of this sale, and you'll notice them as soon as you walk in. A modest selection of sandals, flats, and pumps, as well as three haute sneaker styles, greet you first; all are $39. There aren't many sandal or pump styles to choose from (and we were disappointed, but not surprised, that there weren't any espadrilles), but we dug the flat sandal-bootie hybrids and the Vince Camuto and Louise et Cie pumps with the wide bow over the toes, embellished with just a little of what looks like chrome.
Booties and knee-high boots—mostly leather, some suede—are toward the back of the room, and this is where you'll want to spend most of your time. Tall boots from the Signature Vince Camuto collection are $125, while Vince Camuto and Louise et Cie boots (and all booties) are $79. You might want to shell out the extra $45 for the tall boots from the signature collection, though, which struck us as more elegant. We spotted plenty of stock in sizes 6 through 9 for all styles, with a few 5s and 10s thrown in.
Among the booties, we loved the flat utilitarian style with the brass ankle clasp (available in black leather or grey suede), as well as the spiky stiletto version. Honorable mention goes to a brown bootie with a leather braid around the ankle. But the riding boots were definitely the highlight, ranging from flat biker boots in black and brown to flirty suede numbers with stiletto heels, plus one combo style with leather at the bottom and suede up the calf and a chunky heel.
Bright, colorful pumps and accessories were in short supply, but there were a few summery standouts, including a pair of blue snakeskin pumps with zippered straps, cheetah-print stiletto booties (we liked the sparkly rhinestone-encrusted version, too), and a selection of large and medium-sized Pantone-blue bags.
And speaking of the bags, we were impressed by the number of large and medium satchels and hobos ($79, or $125 for bags in the signature collection) We were drawn to a functional black leather cross-body satchel and a cream-colored geometric number, both from the signature collection. There was also a smattering of pretty (though not exceptional) clutches and wallets for $29.
If you're more interested in apparel, it's located in an alcove to the far right-hand side of the room, past the wall of purses. Blouses, skirts, shorts, and pants are $25, dresses (ranging from mini to maxi) and jumpsuits are $40, and outerwear—including a modest but very cool collection of light leather jackets—is $79. Sizes S, M, and L and 2 through 8 are plentiful, and we spotted a decent number of XS, XL, 0 and 10 items as well, but be sure to check clothing tags for proper sizes, as the labels on the hangers are almost universally wrong: We very nearly made off with a buttery perforated leather skirt before realizing it was a size 0.
If you're pressed for time, skip the less-than-impressive selection of blouses, skirts, and pants, but leave a few minutes to find the gems among the dresses and outerwear, including a creamy ,perforated white leather jacket and Camuto's riff on the black leather biker jacket, with quilted patches over the shoulder and wrist, as well as the sequin-encrusted sheath dresses.
Skip this sale if you're just looking to stock up on spring and summer styles, but if you're already harking back to pumpkin spice lattes and are in the market for a dependable pair of boots with a satchel to match, the modest prices here are hard to beat. Footwear will be restocked regularly, according to staff, but what you see is what you get for apparel. See the full sale hours below.
