Model Selfies, After-Parties: A Week with 'Nylon's Beauty Editor

Welcome to Beauty Diary: Seven days of getting glam with an industry insider. From publicists to professional makeup artists, this is a week in the life of someone who lives and breathes beauty.

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

It's easy to think of hair and makeup as a distant second-place to the clothes at Fashion Week, but at this month's New York shows, it seemed like nothing on the runway was as interesting as as the beauty looks, from the neon-painted wigs at Jeremy Scott to the unexpectedly elegant diamond-encrusted undereye situation at Rodarte. One of the experts tasked with documenting it all was Nylon magazine's Jade Taylor, senior beauty editor and senior grooming expert at Nylon Guys.

For seven days during New York Fashion Week, we follow Jade, who, when she wasn't hanging in Queens with her two cats, dashed from show to show, snapped selfies with models backstage, celebrated Galentine's Day, snuck photos of the Kardasho-Jenner clan, and somehow (through the power of witchcraft, we can only assume), managed to stay on top of her beauty game through this winter's insane sub-zero temperatures.

Kicking off NYFW with my handy dandy M.A.C Cosmetics face book they send out each season.

Focusing on my skincare routine for the beginning of fashion week, because we all know that lack of sleep, real food, etc. is the enemy.

My first show of the season: Creatures of the Wind! Dreamy, '70s-inspired hair and makeup.

Starting my morning backstage at Tanya Taylor! How amazing are these leather bound, low-ponytails?

Made my way over to backstage at Jason Wu! Wavy locks and natural makeup are already a big trend for the season.

My current makeup routine for NYFW! Obviously, the more lipstick options, the better.

Backstage at Alexander Wang! Totally obsessed with the grungy strands the models are rocking. Also: I spotted Kimye and Nicki Minaj moments after this was taken.

It's Valentines Day! Balloons for days.

Sorting out my NYFW fragrance options for the week. Crystals and energy included.

Spending Galentine's Day with my BFF and hairstylist Remy Moore!

My hair care routine all has one thing in common: texture!

Backstage at Prabal Gurung. Slicked back hair and clean skin are key.

Selfie of me freezing. I'm wearing M.A.C Cosmetics lipstick in "Grey Friday" for a frostbitten/evil look.

Backstage at Opening Ceremony! These nails (left), specifically, were inspired by Polaroid film. Those digits (right) are inspired by Spike Jonze's film archive.

Starting my extremely busy day backstage at Karen Walker. Finally, some color! Love the teal accents in the makeup and nails.

Backstage at 3.1 Phillip Lim. Dark lips and nails are my favorite.

Taking selfies with my baby angel, model Avery Tharp, backstage at 3.1 Phillip Lim!

Spotted Kendall Jenner getting her face painted by Charlotte Tilbury backstage at Donna Karan.

Ran into one of my favorite models, Oxana Moiseeva (left), outside of Thom Browne before I went in. I told her she looked like an angel, and she deadpanned, "That's the inspiration!" Really obsessed with these black tears (right) backstage.

Headed over to Rag & Bone backstage. Super cool messy hair and minimal makeup.

Backstage at one of my favorite shows, Libertine! Model Jessica Luost (left) is werking it, and my baby girl, model Cristina Piccone (right), showing off the rad nails, hair,
and makeup.

Stayed to watch the Libertine show (because, duh) and naturally I want every single outfit...including what the boys are wearing! Also: his pink hair is amazing.

With my longtime creative collaborator, stylist Michael Kozak, before heading to the Libertine after-party!

Backstage at Rodarte! There are diamonds under the models' eyes. Ran into model Avery Tharp (center) again, obsessed with her face and this entire look. I can't get enough.

Headed over to Marc by Marc Jacobs backstage and fell in love with model Sarah Brannon because I asked her to do whatever she wanted, so she flipped me off. Swoon.

Being weird with model Julia Belyakova before Marc by Marc Jacobs starts.

Chatting on a Moschino telephone, of course, with Gigi Hadid (left)
backstage at Jeremy Scott, then got weird with model Charlotte Free (center). I'm obsessed with all this color!

Painted wigs backstage at Jeremy Scott.

Now I'm backstage at Elizabeth and James. Thought this model eating a lollipop was super cute!

Headed over to Proenza Schouler backstage. These girls look super Amish and I love it. Alice (bottom left) shows off her piercing.

Ran into one of my favorite models, Paulina Panas (right), backstage at The Blonds! Love the black/white cat eye moment. Model Monika McCarrick (right) shows off her lavish nails by CND.

That's a wrap for me! Leaving you with all this nail amazingness by CND backstage at The Blonds. See ya next season!
