The Yigal Azrouël sample sale kicks off this morning, and we previewed the merchandise at 225 West 39th Street beforehand to check it all out. While the prices here might not be astoundingly cheap, most items are at a really great discount — especially when it comes to the offshoot label Cut25.
First up after coat check are jackets and dresses. We saw mostly size 4s in jackets, but sizes range from 0—6. Prices are $195 for non-leather or fur, and $475 for leather and $700 for anything with fur. We liked a black croc-embossed leather jacket that was originally $1,990 — so about 75% off retail — and a leather jacket with fox fur panels marked down from $3,975. A pink blazer at the end of the rack also stood out ($175).
Dresses ($175) are next, with sizes 0—8 pretty equally represented and the occasional 10 mixed in. It looks like dresses are arranged in order of length, with the shorter ones right after the jackets, and full-length towards the back of the room. There are a ton of good styles and colors to choose from, but we particularly liked a blue sheath with a sweetheart neckline, a black leather fit-and-flare with an embossed bodice ($475) , and a full-length long-sleeved burgundy dress with a draped bodice and leather detail at the waist. Gowns are $295, and we liked a black and red one-shoulder style the most.
Tops and pants are to the right on racks down the middle of the space. Jersey and cut-and-sew tops are $60, knits are $150, and and woven tops are $95. Leather pants are $195, while the rest are $95. We weren't too impressed with the tops, but we did note a black sleeveless one with mesh inserts, as well as a blue structural cold shoulder style. Leather pants are available in white pebbled leather and a rich burgundy color. There are some skirts ($95, leather is $195) mixed in, like a white mesh mini with colorful embroidered stripes, but most of them are on the right-hand side of the room.
Cut25 is in both the back right and left corners of the room. All of it was being snatched up quickly at the preview because pricing is so low. Modal tops are $25; pants (non-leather), woven tops, and skirts are $35; knits are $40; dresses and blazers are $55; leather bottoms and gowns are $65; and outerwear and leather apparel is $125. Some items are missing tags, but it looked like there's a good assortment of sizes. A gray distressed racerback tank top ($25) caught our eye, as did a green halter-neck dress ($40), and a cropped blue leather jacket ($125).
Yigal Azrouël samples are on the right in the front of the room. Most styles can be found on the floor in better condition, but shoppers were making a beeline here anyway. Most didn't have garment tags, but a green and black surplus dress stood out, as did a black cowl-neck cocktail dress. Dresses make up most of the racks, but for samples, jersey cut and sew tops are $30; non-leather pants, woven tops, and skirts are $75; knits and dresses are $95; blazers are $110; outerwear and leather bottoms are $125; gowns are $195; leather apparel and outerwear is $225; and fur pieces is $600.
There are a few bags ($45 for small, $95 for large) and two small bins of belts (skinny are $10, thicker ones are $20) on a table in the front right. Scarves are on a table in the very front of the room — Samples are $30, Yigal Azrouël styles are $60, and Cut25 styles are $15.
There are no dressing rooms here, so be prepared to change in front of people if you really need to check whether something fits. It's unlikely that markdowns will come during this three-day sale — and if they do, the best stuff will probably be gone anyway.
