The Cynthia Rowley sample sale is in full swing, and we stopped by this morning shortly after it opened. There was no line, but we expect that to change with the post-work crowd, because the deals are really good (everything is up to 80% off).
The sale space, housed in the back of the label's tiny West Village boutique is jam-packed with merch, including pieces from the current season as well as samples and past-season looks. Shoes, hats, and jewelry, are on offer as well (but sadly, you'll still have to pay full price for those coveted flask bangles—they're not on sale this time around).
Organization is lacking—everything is kind of lumped together without much of a system. Regardless, it's worth the extra effort: prices start at just $9 for metallic belts and hats and cap off at $199 for a handful of more luxe items, like leather and faux fur coats.
For the most part, items are marked with colored stickers that denote their price (lists with the corresponding prices are posted all over the walls). Some items, like samples, one-offs, and higher-end gear, are priced as marked.
The sale is heavy on dresses, and we found everything from cotton gingham shirt-dresses for $79 to leather-detailed shifts for $99. You'll also find tons of summery neoprene tank dresses, which range from $79 to $99.
For bottoms, expect to find loads of skirts. We spotted a confetti-print circle skirt for $39, silk trumpet skirts for $59, and sequin-covered styles for $79. There are also some pants, including printed neoprene leggings for $79 and leather pants for $199.
Tops include both summer styles and cooler weather picks: we found a bunch of super soft chenille sweaters ($39), which would be perfect for chillier fall days. There's also plenty of silky tees and blouses for $39, as well as some cotton tees in various prints for $19 each.
There aren't a lot of jackets, but we did find some metallic tuxedo blazers for $79 and lightweight cropped styles for $39.
As for accessories, your best bet is the shoes: leather slip-on sneakers are $69, while sandals are $39 and all heels are just $79. The rest of the accessory selection includes sunglasses ($29), scarves ($39), and a small selection of jewelry, such as beetle cocktail rings for $25. We also noticed a tiny bin full of swimwear in this area, with all full suits marked just $39. We noticed that people having trouble finding sizes or matching tops and bottoms.
There is a fitting room in the shop, but the line for it was fairly long, so most shoppers took to changing in between the racks. Pretty much everything is out on the sale floor, so there will be minimal restocking. Additionally, we were told that more markdowns are unlikely, so if you're planning on going, we say the sooner the better. —Gillian Fuller
