Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
First, they opened a Soho showroom for shoppers to try on dresses. Next came a Henri Bendel shop-in-shop. Now, Rent the Runway is graduating to its first full-fledged freestanding store, opening at 16 West 18th Street on Wednesday, September 3rd.
Those looking for a special-occasion dress can book an appointment online (starting now!) and fill out a style profile that includes sizing, body shape, and fitting preferences so that a personal shopper can have a selection of the 850 dresses in their rotating stock at the ready when you come in, as well as complementing accessories. This service comes with a $25 fee, but you can also walk in for no charge.
Like more than one dress? Each fitting room is equipped with an iPad Mini so that stylists can save your favorite styles for a future rental.
Rentals can be carried out of the store or mailed to you at a future date. Tailors will offer temporary hemming and strap adjustments on Thursdays and Fridays, and the entire store can be booked out for special events like wedding styling.
This location will be replacing their shop-in-shop at Henri Bendel, which closes August 31st—the department store is transitioning away from third-party sales in an effort to focus on its own brand.
