Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Shakespeare & Co. was only able to hold on for so long. Rumors of the independent bookstore's closing started back in April—due to what else but an unsustainable rent hike—and the store vowed to stay in place until someone else came in.

And now that day has come—Gothamist reports that Shakespeare will be vacating 716 Broadway at the end of the month.

A tipster, who confirmed the closing date with an employee, wrote in to the local site that the store is hosting an "Everything Must Go!" sale, with books going for up to 50% off retail prices.

Shakespeare and Co. has another location on the Upper East Side near Hunter College that will remain open.
