The Otte Sample Sale: Big on Discounts, Small on Stock

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

The Otte pop-up shop at 193 Bedford Ave is closing its doors on Monday July 21st, and staff is clearing out the stock by offering up to 90% off merchandise from 3.1 Phillip LimTheory, Kenzo, and more.

The deals are seriously good, but the sale itself is sort of hit or miss: sizing is all over the map, and for the most part, you'll only find one of each item. Additionally, the shop is tiny; when we were there with about seven other shoppers, it was cramped and difficult to move around.

We found $75 jeans from brands Acne and Citizens of Humanity, and below the shelf of denim, you'll find tops and bottoms marked $50 and $30—we spotted a velvet Rachel Comey crop top for $50 and $30 Theory tees.

The rest of the stock is priced individually: tags on each item indicate a sale price, which is then discounted a further 50 percent. The stock is fairly small, however: there were only four racks of goods to sort through.

For tops, we found mostly summer styles, like a See by Chloe pleated blouse for $52 and a Tsumori Chisato printed silk tee for $108.There's a smaller selection of heavier sweaters, including an Equipment cashmere leopard-print crew neck for $99 and a Carven lace-detailed cardigan for $50.

Bottoms include shorts, skirts, and pants: look for Rag & Bone pleated skorts for $118 and Theyskens' Theory satin wide-legged trousers for $138. There was a fairly varied selection of shorts in this section, including Acne tie-dye styles ($136) and printed pairs from Chinti & Parker for $61.

The selection of dresses was, in our opinion, the highlight of the sale: you'll find both casual and fancier styles from a variety of brands among the racks. Some highlights: a Cacharel floral shirtdress for $97, a Sea New York drop-waist lacey boho number for $148, and a MQ Alexander McQueen printed body con style, marked $152.

Accessories, as we mentioned earlier, are limited to a small rack of jewelry, some $56 Maison Boinet leather belts, and one pair of Rachel Comey leather oxfords with cutout details for $157. The jewelry includes both necklaces and bracelets, but we did notice some damages, including one bejeweled statement necklace missing a few rhinestones, which was marked $40.

Finally, two bins directly below the cash register hold deeply discounted picks: one bin holds damages, which are all marked $15 (we found a pair of Isabel Marant Etoile jeans with a massive rip in the back), while the other contains a selection of $20 Cosabella thongs and Wolford tights.

There are a few small fitting rooms in the back of the shop. We overheard one saleswoman mention that some new items will be arriving at the store later today; however, when we asked another, she said she wasn't positive that they'll be restocking or getting any new items in. Additionally, further markdowns are unlikely but still possible, so we'd recommend checking back in before the sale wraps up at the end of the month.—Gillian Fuller
