It's hard out there for an indie bookstore. But it's slightly less hard for an indie bookstore with the kind of super-dedicated fanbase that will launch an Indiegogo campaign when a rent spike makes a move necessary.
That's what happened to St. Marks Bookshop, whose customers rallied when the business was priced out of their Third Avenue location last month. Now the owners are setting up shop in a city-owned property at 136 East Third Street, just west of Avenue A.
St. Marks Bookshop 2.0 is about half the size of the original, but Clouds Architecture has made use of every square foot with curvy wood shelving designed for smooth browsing. Right now the official opening date is Monday, July 14th, but it's been pushed back a few times—we recommend checking the store's Twitter account for updates.—Hali Berman
