Plenty of Leather and Blazers Left at the Helmut Lang Sale

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

We took a trip to Chelsea Market this afternoon to check in on the Helmut Lang sample sale, and were happy to find a still-solid collection of leather and ready-to-wear in all sizes. No markdowns have been made yet, and a good portion of the remaining stock boasts price tags in the triple digits.

Though staffers said they weren't going to restock, we're calling their bluff: when we entered, there were only two magenta cross body bags ($159) available; as we were leaving, we noticed at least fifteen on the same shelf.

Regardless, some stock is sold out, which makes us think they maybe just had a surplus of accessories. There are no more of the colorful cocktail dresses that we spotted last time; no sweaters; and only two shearling jackets left for $699 (both in a size small).

What we did find: lots and lots of blazers. You'll see the Helmut Lang for Intermix cropped style and the orange canvas-and-leather jacket in the gallery above. We also liked the graphic-printed blazers, which broke up the racks of mostly all-black leather. All of the blazers are $199 each, with the exception of a calf-hair trimmed tuxedo jacket, which is $249.

You'll still find a good deal of leather motorcycle jackets for $399 and cold-weather overcoats for $299. We didn't see any lightweight jackets, but did find some sleeveless blazers for $199 that could work as an extra layer for cooler summertime nights.

We were surprised to find that the selection of leather pants is still going strong, with options available in all sizes (though we did notice less of the plaster-hued ones this time around). These are $299, and draped wool trousers and denim leggings are $129. Jeans and corduroy skinnies are housed down a small flight of stairs, and are tagged $79.

The causal clothes are a bit limited, with only some cut-and-sew tops for $39, lightweight shorts for $129, and camis for $29 left. There are a handful of cut-and-sew draped jersey dresses ($80), but only in sizes 8, 10, and 12.

You can still find camel leather-paneled tops for $115, calf-hair skirts for $179, and blouses for $89, but quantity is running low on these.

Shoes (boots, calf-hair pumps, and heeled sandals) are all still $249, and are only available in sizes 36-40.

All in all, we'd say that (though pricey), the sale's still worth hitting up—especially if you're in the market for leather. Still no details on further discounts, but staffers said it's possible there will be price reductions on Sunday, the last day of the sale.—Gillian Fuller
