The Gant sample sale, which opened to the public earlier this morning, is this month's gift for the guys. We stopped by the preview last night, and—despite the sale having moved to a smaller space (last season it was held at 260 Fifth Avenue, this month it's over at 225 Fifth)—the menswear selection is on point.
Discounts are up to 80% off retail, and many of the items still have their original or outlet price stamped on the tags, so you can really appreciate how much you're saving.
Immediately upon entry, you'll find two massive racks of classic button-downs and polos in light summer colors and a variety of patterns, both priced at $45. A fully stacked rack of tees and tank tops for only $20 is located nearby. Sizes are primarily mediums and larges—some smaller and larger sizes dot the racks, but you'll have to move quickly if you want to score those.
Racks of pants can be found on either side of the space, ranging from cargo shorts and pants to linen and cotton cords to the occasional dress pant. Fitted Gant Rugger canvas chinos abound. Denim is located at the end of the room in several large bins, split up by size. Sizes here range primarily from 30-34, give or take a few. All bottoms are $50 alike.
A small selection of hoodies, largely in gray and navy hues, are $45, while soft cotton sweaters and zip-ups, perfect for layering, are $50. There is also a long table of chunky winter knits, also $50, featuring boat neck and button-down wool styles.
Three entire racks are devoted to outerwear and sports coats. Most of the outerwear consists of lightweight spring/fall jackets and nylon raincoats, as well as a small selection of puffy vests, $100 and $75, respectively. Blazers are $195 and range in style from tweed and twill to more slim cut cotton pieces. We saw lots of stripes and dark colors.
In men's accessories, we saw socks ($20 for a pack of three or $7 for a single, colorful pair), leather belts ($25), three-packs of white tees, a single bin of wool scarves and hats, and two small racks of shoes, made of mostly sneakers and flip-flops ($40 a pair). Bright and fun swim trunks are $25, down from $89.99.
The women's selection is limited, to say the least. Two back-to-back racks feature a few blue-and-white summer dresses with a drawstring waist ($45), yellow and white cotton pants ($50), and the pièce de résistance, a Gant by Michael Bastian "friendly fur" anorak from winter 2011, reduced from its $387 outlet price.
Women's accessories include belts, baseball caps ($25), a surprisingly decent selection of (pink!) canvas gym bags, $75 or $125 depending on the size, and exactly two pairs of shoes.
Unfortunately for the ladies (or perhaps fortunately, depending on the state of your bank account this sample sale season), the sale will not be restocked and all the merchandise is already out on the floor. No word yet on whether prices are scheduled to drop, but the sale runs through Sunday, and it would seem a likely possibility.
Cash and credit are accepted, but keep in mind that there is no fitting room at this location. Check out the gallery above for photos, and the dealfeed below for hours.—Marina Charny
