In a city where barre and bootcamp rule the fitness scene, sometimes it's nice to just go back to the basics—squats, pushups, throwing a medicine ball against a wall. Enter Throwback Fitness, a studio in a Fifth Avenue office suite that creates workout routines from the old-school standbys, combined with sessions on a rowing machine that simultaneously work the arms, core, and legs.
How they really get you to push yourself is through competition—you're teamed up with classmates throughout the 45-minute session to engage in a friendly rivalry to see who can get through their reps the fastest, or who can row the farthest.
After a warmup and a quick demo on proper rowing form, the class goes into its two workouts: Phys Ed and Recess. In the first part, you're paired up with a partner, and one rows while the other does a set of floor exercises whose reps are specified on a blackboard—a recent class had pushups, lunges, and crunches, all of which involved weights. When the person on the floor finishes his or her reps, the partners switch.
The real fun comes in Recess, which could include something akin to Throwback's version of Flip Cup. But instead of chugging beer, attendees need to do a particular exercise as fast as possible, while the rest of their teammates hold static poses like planks or squats. The race to the finish really revs up the calorie burn.
Throwback Fitness is offering a special deal for Racked readers who have yet to check them out. By entering the code TBFRacked at checkout, you can pick up two classes for the price of one—that's just $19 per class. Lace up your sneakers and get ready to sweat.
