This morning's very slow moving Roger Vivier sample sale line occupied both sides of West 33rd Street from Eighth down Ninth Avenue outside of Soiffer Haskin. We arrived at 8:45am for the 10am opening, and entered just before 1 pm. (yes, that is four hours).
The sale space is laden with wallets and belts ($100-$200), clutches ($650), large handbags ($875-$1000), and a bounty of shoes ($275-$700) and boots ($1000 and up).
Roger Vivier is credited with inventing the stiletto heel, and there were plenty at today's sale, including iconic rose thorn and inward-curving heels. The style selection is extensive, from Gommette patent leather ballerina flats ($275) to Sandal Rose stilettos ($600). This morning's Vivier enthusiasts clamored around Cabas Metro totes ($700), which are available in a variety of muted colors.
We heard that merchandise will not be restocked, and shoe sizes are very limited. If you're out to snag a pair and are smaller than a size 8 or 9, it's probably not worth the wait in line. Also, a max of ten items can be purchased per customer. One of our commenters says: "This morning there were couples each buying 10 pairs. So the boyfriend was there to allow his girlfriend to buy a total of 20 pairs. Come on now. That's absurd and a little sick. It was like their last meal."
Last but certainly not least, cash is not accepted; so be sure to have your credit cards ready. The sale runs from until 7pm today, from 9am to 6:30pm Saturday through Monday, and from 9am to 5pm on Tuesday. As usual, Soiffer Haskin sniffed us out immediately and actually took away our cell phones, so we were unable to take any photos. Mizhattan has a bunch worth checking out though.—Kimberly Colvin
