Yesterday Monika Chiang kicked off its second sample sale this month, amid rumors that the brand may be shuttering. If the rumors are true, at least they're going out with a bang. We stopped by shortly before closing time last night and found a sales floor full of merchandise, low prices, a bevy of excited shoppers, and pumping dance music. Once again, prices top out at $100.
The true draw here is the shoe selection, which is front and center and features loads of wedge sneakers, sky-high stilettos, over-the-knee boots, and a smattering of ballet flats and loafers. Prices start at $40 for flats and top out at $65 for heels. If you're looking to freshen up your shoe game for spring, this may be the golden opportunity.
The brand advertised leather jackets for $100, but we didn't spot any on the racks last night. There are a few racks of leather gaucho pants and leggings for $80 and skirts for $55. We also spotted a few styles of leather tops and leather-trimmed dresses.
Everything else at the sale is reminiscent of the stock that's still available on the brand's website. Silk tanks and blouses are $30 to $40 and long-sleeve tops and sweaters will run you $45 to $55. There's also a pretty solid selection of denim for $25, including faded black jeans and patterned styles.
In the far back corner you'll find a hit-or-miss selection of slinky dresses with back cut outs and silky jumpsuits for $50. We were pretty smitten with the Jabot dress and the Cocktail dress.
The handbag selection pales in comparison to the last sample sale and is probably leftover stock from last time around and the jewelry selection was pretty much non-existent.
If you're looking for a leather jacket or have a specific item in mind, there's plenty of hope for restocking. Last night we asked if there were any non-wedge sneakers available and a sweet staffer magically brought out two non-wedge styles that were not previously on display. We also saw staffers bring out a few racks of new stock, including new styles, as the racks were depleted. This definitely felt like an everything-must-go sale, so markdowns will probably come towards the end of the week.
The sale continues through Sunday, March 30th, at 225 Fifth Avenue from 10am to 7pm through Saturday and from 10am to 3pm on Sunday. Note: there are no fitting rooms.— Kiran
