The Jonathan Simkhai sample sale kicked off this morning at their studio in the Garment District, with discounts up to 90% off. We didn't see anything over $100 among the two racks packed with cut-out dresses, heavy knits, leather-trimmed shorts and color-blocked button downs. They were even offering 20% off retail price for the current collection.
Two very enthusiastic shoppers took the hoarding approach to the sale once they heard the prices, filling an entire box full of clothes just minutes before the scheduled 11am start. Since we were some of the few people early to the sale, we had time to wait around until some of the hoarded samples were tried on and put back on the racks for our shopping pleasure.
Among the racks we found spring-appropriate floral jacquard dresses and silk dresses with mesh details for $60, a striped apron dress with midriff cutout and red leather straps for $80, and white poplin dresses with eyelet details. While most of the pieces were actual samples, we only noticed a few styles with damaged zippers or fabric flaws—but be sure to double check.
A large variety of styles true to Simkhai's sporty aesthetic included sweatshirts with heavy mesh sleeves for $80 and track shorts with leather waistband and piping for $40. Leather shorts with perforated side cutouts are going for $80, and we saw one shopper snag a slouchy black leather jacket for $100—definitely the best deal at the sale.
Another great deal is the pinstripe crop top going for $40. They were still marking prices on each garment as we shopped, so make sure to ask about prices if you don't see them. There's one bin of $10 samples, and based on the corduroy patchwork shirts, tie-dye leggings and terry cloth crop tops, we understood the low price.
Lined up on the floor below the racks are black pony hair shoes with white soles from their last presentation for $60. Most of the shoes are around a size 39, but we were told they ran a little small.
With one large mirror in the back of the studio, it's sure to get crowded with more than a few people trying on clothes. It sounds like they won't be restocking, so if you want to take advantage of these deals get there today or tomorrow. The sale runs through Saturday, March 30th from 11am to 7pm daily at 209 W. 38th Street.
