Finnish design company Marimekko is hosting their first-ever sample sale in New York this week (up until now, it's been bi-annual sales in Finland!) at 260 Fifth Avenue. Fans can expect a conglomerate of bold patterns and prints designed exclusively by Marimekko. At today's sale, we found a good selection of home decor, women and children's apparel, bags, and accessories at up to 80% off.
We stopped by during lunch hours and there was a short wait to get in, while the two lines formed inside seemed much longer. One line was for the dressing rooms while the other was for the cashiers.
Apparel and bags seem to be the most popular items, as well as bedding. In fact, we actually didn't see any bedding on the tables—just in the arms of shoppers who were holding the big bags of comforters. At $40 each, they were a bargain.
Other than there, there are four bins and one rack of children's apparel. Socks, tights, and bibs are all $5, clothing is $10, and outerwear is $20. We saw plenty of cute red and blue striped shirts, as well as pants in different patterns.
Women's clothing is separated by fabric: woven and jersey. Prices for jersey start at $10 for underwear; $20 for leggings; $40 for tops, skirts, pants, and shorts; and $40 for pajamas and sleepwear. For wovens, skirts, pants, and shorts were $60; tops are either $19 or $60; runway dresses are $200 and regular dresses are $100.
Jackets and blazers are $100, while coats and outerwear are $200. Men's striped shirts are $60. We also saw a large amount of striped long sleeve shirts and tees for $40.
Most of the items still have their original price tags, as well as previous store markdowns. For some reason, some items were previously marked down to prices that are below what they're currently marked at the sale. For example, we found a striped Keikaus dress (originally $219) marked down to $49, but it's currently $60 at the sample sale. Another jersey dress we spotted was previously marked down to $39, but it's now also $60 at the sale. We advise you to shop wisely and do some research.
Sizes were spotty, but we saw tops and dresses in between 34 and 42, and between extra-small and large. While skimming through the racks, size medium and large dominated. Many of the styles are meant to be worn big and seem easy to take in a couple of inches if you're set on one style but can't find it in your size.
In the bedding department, pillowcases and shams are $10; sheets and sheet sets are $20 (originally $159); duvet covers and comforters are $40. For the bathrooms, washcloths and hand towels are $5; bath towels are $10 and beach towels are $20; bath robes are $50 and shower curtains are $30. We saw some Marimekko x Crate & Barrel bath products in the mix.
There are also Christmas ornaments for $5, paper napkins for $3, and Fatboy dog beds for $40. Although listed, we didn't see any chopping boards, trays, pots, coasters, or oven mitts. (They may have been snatched up in the morning.) A couple of shoppers were grabbing up boxes of Converse x Marimekko shoes, which were only $30.
Accessories-wise, there's a table with slippers ($15), pouches containing fabric necklaces ($20), clutches ($40), cosmetic bags ($20), phone accessories ($20) and canvas coin purses ($10).
Finally, alongside the cashiers there are over thirty rolls of fabric on display for $15 a yard. Two sale associates are on hand to cut the desired length. Behind the fabrics, you'll find the brand's signature totes. The printed lightweight canvas bags are $10 and the heavyweight canvas or nylon bags were $40. See our photo gallery for the complete price list, as well as other offerings at the sale.
A staffer told us they're hoping for more restocking since the sale is doing so well. It runs through Sunday March 23rd from 10am to 8pm Tuesday through Thursday, from 9am to 7pm on Friday, from 10am to 8pm on Saturday, and from 10am to 3pm on Sunday.—Hsini
