We scoped out the Surface To Air sample sale preview yesterday evening expecting a showroom chock full of fresh French-chic goods. While much of the merchandise was pretty chic, we were generally disappointed with the selection and pricing. For those of you who enjoyed last year's sample sale, this one might be a let down. The sales floor is much smaller this time around with less to offer. Also, many of the pieces are repeats from last year's sale and still at approximately the same price point. We recognized some of them from the brand's Fall 2012 collection.
That said, Surface To Air exudes timeless downtown cool, so if you are a fan of the brand and willing to empty your wallet, you can probably still go home happy. We spotted loads of tailored blazers, buttery leathers, and utilitarian bags that could seamlessly join any fashion girl or guy's wardrobe.
The racks are about equally divided between ladies and guys. The ladies' area is toward the front of the sales floor and is much more spacious. Guys have been relegated to a far back corner. Even at yesterday's preview it was tricky to navigate that space. In the middle, you'll find shoes, accessories, and bags.
Ladies, upon entry you'll be faced with the highlight of this sale: outerwear, including trenches and leathers, and those tailored blazers. As you make your way deeper into the sales floor, you'll spot silky patterned dresses, mini skirts, leggings and pants, and a rack full of tees. A full spread of sizes is available. The complete price list is in our photo gallery, but highlights include blazers at $120, leather jackets at $280, leggings at $80, and t-shirts at $30.
Guys, you'll probably be drawn in by the tables of denim and racks of suede jackets and textured blazers. There are also some attractive button front shirts and knitwear. Unfortunately, many of the more interesting styles are only available in sizes on the smaller and larger end of the spectrum, and we didn't spot too much in mediums or larges. Pricing highlights include denim at $60, coats at $220, leather jackets at $300, and knitwear at $90.
We weren't particularly impressed with the accessories selection, but the shoes and handbags for both sexes are tempting and feel pretty fresh and current. Men's leather shoes, including a variety of dressy and casual slip on styles, are $90. For women, low sandals are $110 and leather shoes (including a few bootie styles) are $140. Personally, we loved the leather and suede bags too, all of which are $170. If you need a new messenger bag, all purpose tote, and mini-backpack, this sale has some solid options.
The sale continues through Sunday, March 16th, at 225 Fifth Avenue; as usual, full details are in the dealfeed. Note, there are no fitting rooms.— Kiran
