Today will go down as a sad day in shopping history—discounting pioneers Loehmann's are officially closing. Due to the company's third bankruptcy and subsequent liquidation, the New York area stores—the only ones that still remain open—are finally shutting their doors. So, if you want to try to snag one final deal, or you just want to say "goodbye" to a legendary chain where your mother and grandmother also probably shopped, today is your last chance.
Prices when we stopped by the Chelsea flagship last night were down to 80% off clothing and 90% off the seven (!!!) remaining pairs of shoes they still had in stock. The rumor then was that everything in the store today will be reduced to 90% off. But "everything" doesn't actually include much merchandise.
The women's department, if you can still call it that, is now all consolidated onto the ground floor, and the pickings are extremely slim. We saw one rack of clothing with a sign above it that said "Damaged," but it could just as accurately have been placed on almost any rack in the store.
On the few racks that contain all undamaged clothing, however, you'll still find a number of Ivanka Trump's designs. Many of her pieces that had been languishing have finally sold, but it's kind of astounding that at this point, shoppers are tending to snap up less attractive, damaged merchandise, at equivalent prices, rather than buying her clothing. We wonder if it's the actual designs or the Trump name that they're associated with, that are making it difficult for Loehmann's to practically give her clothes away.
Despite the fact that the store is so picked over, there's an extremely long line of shoppers with overflowing baskets waiting for the dressing rooms. In response, some customers are now forsaking the fitting rooms and are trying on clothing anywhere and everywhere on the floor, including in front of the big display windows. Some have come prepared for this and are wearing tanks and leggings, while others are just doing it in their underwear—passersby be damned. It 's kind of like being at the Barneys Warehouse sale, only surrounded by much cheaper merchandise.
Diamond and Gold Card Member discounts are still good—thankfully, that seems to have been part of the deal the Loehmann's owners made with their liquidation company. And in other good news….the toilet paper has been replenished in the ladies room.
For ninety-three years, Loehmann's has been bringing discounted designer clothing to generations of shoppers. We personally have spent an embarrassing number of hours and dollars there. Thank you and goodbye Loehmann's. You will be missed.
