"There are just certain details that people can't see online. People love being able to touch and feel the fabric," Tinker Tailor founder Aslaug Magnusdottir told WWD. That's why she's collaborating with Claire Distenfeld of Fivestory for her first offline collection of customizable pieces, which will be available at the Upper East Side boutique for one week only beginning tomorrow.
Magnusdottir, a co-founder of Moda Operandi, and Distenfeld retooled five pieces from Tinker Tailor's core collection to have a Lauren Bacall flair—the paper writes that the boutique owner wanted to pay tribute to the actress after her death earlier this year (and she's not the only one.)
This capsule includes a ball gown skirt, an opera coat, and a dramatic Grecian-style caped dress that are named after Bacall's iconic roles and retail between $650 and $2,260. Customers can examine the samples in store and choose between different fabrics (choosing between silk, wool, and taffeta will affect the price) and colors for their own piece, and a sales associate will be on hand for measurements.
This collaboration marks a slightly different direction for Tinker Tailor, which has typically focused on designer items created specifically for the site with customizable offerings—pieces from Vivienne Westwood, Rodarte, and Ballet Beautiful are currently on offer. It's the first time they're highlighting its made-to-order offerings on an offline platform, and they know Fivestory customers are already fans: When Distenfeld Instagrammed a photo of herself in a made-to-order skirt from the site, WWD writes, Magnusdottir immediately noticed a spike in sales of that style.
