Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
We've come to think of COS as a wonderful-yet-flaky Swedish friend who's always ducking out of plans at the last minute. "Yeah, I'll definitely be in New York this fall, we should toootally hang out." "So, I'm really sorry, but I just booked this L.A. trip? Miss you though!" "Ugh, I know we said November but work has been crazy."
But the Spring Street store is finally—FINALLY!—open, and since there are four floors of minimalist goodness to browse, we came up with a list of ten COS picks to zero in on.
1. Draped Lapel Dress
COS's women's holiday collection is full of riffs on the blazer, but this $225 strapless dress is definitely the most abstract—and our favorite.
2. Wool Mohair Coat
Yes, it's a little bathrobe-esque, but you won't look like Hugh Hefner wearing it. At $350, COS's wool mohair coat is one of the more expensive items in the store, but the details—tailored shoulders, hidden buttons, a slight fit-and-flare shape—justify the price.
3. Silk Panel Shirt
This $99 cotton poplin and silk blouse may not be the first thing that catches your eye when you enter COS, but we're convinced it's going to be one of the store's sleeper hits. The curved hemline and slightly oversized shape make it a notch fancier than your typical button-down, and thus perfect for teaming with cropped black pants and not looking like a cater waiter.
4. Chunky Sole Lace Up Shoes
COS has both streamlined the traditional menswear oxford and added something to it—chunky soles—with this $190 shoe.
5. Dress With Layered Skirt
The silk organza over-skirt makes this $135 dress just polished enough to be a no-brainer work go-to.
6. Gathered Texture Top
If you're into COS's all-black-everything look, you're going to need to throw in some texture here and there. This $115 gathered top—the natural evolution of the fashion sweatshirt—should do the trick.
7. High-Waist Dress
Some color in the form of a pretty, pretty $135 dress. Go full girly and wear it with pumps to a holiday party, or toughen it up with those chunky-sole lace-ups and a slouchy beanie.
8. Slim Leather Trousers
These $450 trousers are real-deal leather, and about $300 cheaper than most of the boutique pairs out there.
9. Wool Cocoon Cardigan
A non-sad office cardigan if we've ever seen one, this $125 100% wool sweater is ready to combat faulty heaters.
10. Leather Mittens
Face it: mittens are just inherently cuter than gloves. Especially these $69 leather, cashmere-lined ones.
