The J Crew/Madewell Sale Has Something For Literally Anyone

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

The J. Crew sample sale kicks off like, right now, but we scoped out the women's selection at last night's preview. Before you go, be forewarned: You just might knock every lady off your holiday gift list.

Stock is organized handily by brand: Madewell is off to your left, while J. Crew is on the right, though prices are almost exactly the same. Crewcuts and shoes are located in the back of the sale. What you won't find at the back of the sale: Fitting rooms. Unfortunately, there are none.

Sizes, across the board, are sample-size heavy, meaning you'll find tons of 2s, 6s, and 10s, with a few 0s and 4s if you dig around. Much of the stock is actual samples as well—you'll notice "SAMPLE" handwritten on many of the items. Surprisingly, however, everything seems to be in great condition.

First up: the sweaters. Oh, the sweaters: wool, Christmassy, collared, bedazzled, pre-layered, and all for a mere $35. This, naturally, excludes the equally extensive cashmere selection, which runs from $65 for vests to $90 for long-sleeved sweaters.

As for other cozy winter gear: Coats, mostly wool, are all $150, while puffer jackets range from $60 to $90. Scarves and hats, all lined up towards the right, are $20 each—though we're betting the chunkiest of the bunch will be gone the fastest. Leather gloves (there were precious few) are $40.

Dresses are all $60, skirts and jeans are $40, trousers are $70, tops range from $15 tees to $25 chambray and flannel button-ups to $40 blouses. Blazers, both velvet, tweed, and otherwise, are $120.

Bags, located near the hats and scarves, are mostly black or brown leather and range from $90 to $130. Shoes, neatly organized in the back, are mostly pointy-toed ballet flats, loafers, and oxfords for $65, with booties and high heels for $100. Jewelry (there are tons of necklaces) runs from $35 to $65, while sunglasses (there are hardly any) are $25. Belts are $20, and socks are $10.

Staff assures us that there will be plenty of restocking, though there's no word of markdowns just yet—stay tuned.

Bonus: salegoers get to leave with a bonafide, fancy, J. Crew-branded shopping bag—not the usual plain brown bags reserved for sample sales. For times, dates, and more information, see the Dealfeed below.
