Duck out of the cold and fire up your muscles inside the newest Refine Method located in the West Village at 131 Perry Street. The wood-and-concrete-accented studio has a small entrance on the quiet block near the water with stairs leading down to the studio, filled with its signature pulley weight stations lining the walls, kettlebells, and wooden boxes.
Developed by Harvard grad and former New York City ballerina Brynn Putnam, who consulted with athletic trainers and scientists, Refine Method's workout involves repeated series of strength training moves (squats with weights, lat pull-downs on the pulleys) interspersed with bursts of cardio (toe taps on a medicine ball, burpees) between sets and
stretching the active muscle groups afterwards before moving onto the next exercises.
It's all set to the tune of upbeat pop—remixed Britney Spears follows remixed Selena Gomez, and so forth—and the coaching of an heedful instructor who makes sure each participant in the small class of a dozen or are putting forth maximum effort for the full 45 minutes, whether that's moving up to the next kettlebell weight or squeezing in a few more repetitions during a set.
The Perry Street studio is the brand's third in New York (they've already got uptown covered on both the East and West sides.) This location is running on a limited schedule until its grand opening in early January—check out the class times in the link below. Nervous about trying it? Don't be—instructors are especially attentive to newcomers, who can get two classes for the price of one when signing up.
