Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
'Tis (almost) the season of giving, and in certain cases, rewards are involved: Two NYC stores have kicked off their holiday coat drives, providing you with the solution to the age-old question, "Where in my tiny-ass apartment am I going to store this giant coat I never wear?"
First up, leather coat purveyors Veda are asking shoppers to bring their old coats into their flagship store at 19 Mercer Street for their second annual coat drive, happening now throughout the holiday season. All clothing will be donated to the Coalition for the Homeless, and a bonus for do-gooders: you'll also receive 15% off your purchase that day.
Next up, Lolë is collecting your gently used (i.e. less than five years old) coats through December 1st, then selling them during the Brooklyn Flea on November 22nd and 23rd for between $10 and $50. Proceeds will be donated to Ample Harvest, which collects excess food from pantries and gardens and gives it to locals in need. Plus, those who donate will score $50 off their next Lolë coat purchase—meaning that in this case, giving really will make you feel all warm and fuzzy.
