The Best New Store is a loaded Racked Award, especially in New York. We've already got a shopping scene filled with the world's noted department stores, independent shop owners who bring their own unique vibe, and practically an unfair concentration of designer flagships. But just as 2013 was coming to a close, this city got the best holiday gift its retail scene could ask for: Dover Street Market.
We first heard about Rei Kawakubo, powerhouse behind Comme des Garçons, signing a lease for a New York store in a very surprising location—Murray Hill. And the surprises have just keep on coming since then, from unexpected designer collaborations to innovative installations that border on Seussian to a complete store overhaul every six months.
And let's not forget about the brands they carry, with Prada and Supreme housed on the same floor, a rotation of notable pop-ups, and the introduction of new designers as well. The first-floor café is a culinary adventure, and it just keeps getting better as you transverse the seven floors. In short, Dover Street Market is the shopping boost New York didn't know it needed.
