Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
We were at Bergdorf Goodman earlier this week checking out the sale, and in comparison to Barneys and Saks, there is somewhat of a better selection, but probably because the discounts are not as good. Employees were unclear as to whether or not there would be additional markdowns. Some shoes may be down to 50% off retail prices now—be sure to check when you're there.
All of the designer sale bags have been hauled into one room, sitting atop two glass display cases. There is still a good selection of Proenza Schouler and Victoria Beckham, and a few pieces by Alaia and Saint Laurent. Most of the bags are 50% off except Alaia, which is marked down 30%. Those interested in wallets should skip this floor altogether— there was not a single one in sight. Notable bags include a reversible Saint Laurent leather tote for $599, and a Proenza Schouler Black Leather Diagonal Checked PS1 for $1,259.
First, we stopped on two to scope out the shoes. We were delighted to find the selection still rather large, but likely because shoppers are waiting it out for those bigger discounts. Anything with a red dot is 50% off, but anything highlighted in green is 30% off.
In a nutshell, all of the shoes we picked up had a red dot except for Alaia, Chanel and Louboutin. The selection includes everything from studded Saint Laurent booties for $598 to Lanvin high tops for $330.
Then we checked out the sale clothing on five. There is a room with clothing that is 40% off, organized first by designer and then by size, and a room with clothing that is up to 60% off. But don't let this mislead you—a lot of the pieces we chose on the 60% off racks were still only marked down 40%. You really have to look to find the bigger discount.
The 40% off racks include Theory, Vince, Alice & Olivia, and A.L.C. Herve Leger's rack also has a 40% off sign, but we found a red bandage dress marked down 60% at $619. There are lots of jeans as well, like a waxed Current/Elliot pair for $119 and an army green Paige pair for $159. We also picked up a great Pierre Balmain coat, discounted from $1,375 to $829.
Although clothing for 60% off was a bit harder to find, we did see a 3.1 Phillip Lim leopard mixed media sweater for $199. Then we noticed a rack filled with leather motos in all shapes and sizes. This is totally where to look first, as there are some amazing jackets by Theory, Isabel Marant, and J Brand. The Theory Dalayan Leather Moto is on sale for $519 (originally $1,295).
Just before heading out, we had a look at what was left for contemporary bags and shoes. There is not much left for bags, but a decent shoe selection remains. They're 55% off, but anything highlighted is only 30% off, like Stubbs and Wootton and 10 Crosby Derek Lam. Shoes for 55% off include Sophia Webster and Aquatalia.
