Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
It's final markdown time at Barneys. Despite a sign reading "Sale, up to 75% off," most of what we spotted at the Madison Avenue flagship was between 40% and 60% off. Also of note: There wasn't a ton left to shop—nowhere near what was left last January. If you take your time, perhaps you might find something that excites you.
The sale bags have been pushed to a corner towards the back and include Proenza Schouler, Dries van Noten, Balenciaga, and Givenchy. Although the selection is rather small, some good finds include a Proenza Schouler PS1 Continental Wallet in Plum for $229, and a black crocodile Balenciaga clutch for $3,449—still super pricey, but 40% off what it originally cost. There are also a couple of furry Fendi bags, a bright green Givenchy hobo, and a Mark Cross chain shoulder bag.
Onto the sale clothing, which is sectioned off by floor. Some designers still have a lot of sale clothing left, like Balenciaga and Dries van Noten, so you'll find sale racks near their newer collections in addition to what's in the designated sale section. Those looking for that hefty 75% off discount should sift through the premier designer clothing—that's where we saw a couple pair of Chloe sweatpants for $649 (cheaper than the pair we saw last week at Saks), and a red and navy Balenciaga sweater for $189.
The contemporary floors still have a fair selection of sale clothing left, from a $79 T Alexander Wang long sleeve striped tee, to the Isabel Marant Jayna Chain Mail jacket for $959. On the eighth floor, there is an entire area dedicated to Rag & Bone sale apparel, cute sweaters by Carven and Opening Ceremony, and lots of coats and jackets. Notable pieces include an A.L.C emerald tuxedo blazer for $209 and an Acne leather moto for $1,799.
Finally we had a look at the shoes—not the sale's strongest point. A small selection remains on the contemporary floor with the majority of shoes by the store's own Barneys New York line and 10 Crosby Derek Lam. On the main shoe floor we saw the Tabitha Simmons Early Buckle Boots in gold for $479, python Louboutins for $759, and the Givenchy checkered trainers for $419. Mostly all of the shoes are 60% off, while Alaia is marked down to just 40% off. Other brands still available include Lanvin, Prada, and Manolo Blahnik. If you plan to shop, set aside a couple of hours, you'll need the time to find something really great.
