The Bird warehouse sale got hit hard on opening day. Store owner Jen Mankins was on hand when we stopped by at the end of the day to check out the merch and reported that there was a line to the corner earlier in the day. Lots of shoppers meant lots of shopping: the entire back room of the Park Slope boutique was wiped out.
However, there is still a good assortment to pick through—and lots of gems to be found from the store's roster of indie (Apiece Apart, Dana Lee) and major (Isabel Marant, Thakoon) designers. If Comme des Garcons wallets, Proenza Schouler bags, J Brand skinnies, and Steven Alan button-ups sound good to you, keep reading.
Upon entering the shop, you'll find a small selection of men's shoes front and center. For the most part, each pair only had one size left as of our visit, and are to be considered more of a "lucky find" than a guaranteed score. To the right of the shoe display is one rail's worth of menswear. There are a bunch of funky Dana Lee short sleeve button-ups for $49 (from $195), and a selection of long sleeves including a Shipley & Halmos summer plaid for $49 (from $183). A majority of the men's tops are size extra large. Knits and outerwear are also available, as are a large selection of Saturdays tees for just $9 (from $40).
After flipping though men's, you'll find yourself in the women's bottoms section. Shorts and jeans from Madewell, J Brand, and Citizens of Humanity are in good supply. A pair of high waisted Proenza Schouler jeans is just $59 (from $255, in size 27), and there are a few pairs of Isabel Marant shorty-shorts for $99 from $480. Denim from Small Time Operation is just $19 from $255. There are a ton of trousers from 3.1 Phillip Lim, including an icy blue option for $89 (from $375), and A.P.C., including a blue leopard pair for just $39 (from $235).
On the other side of the room you'll find women's dresses. A few highlights included a Thakoon shift for $239 (from $1,420) and and Isabel Marant suede number for $449 (from a whopping $1,799). There are loads of boyish button-ups from the likes of Steven Alan, Rag & Bone, Madewell, and Band of Outsiders. A few blazers round out the womenswear offerings.
The shoe situation for women is the same as it is for men: just a few styles left with one or two sizes per style. As of closing, there was a pair of Madewell flats, a pair of Rachel Comey heels in size 11, a pair of Rag & Bone sandals, and very little else.
Accessories are also rather paltry, but definitely worth looking. There are a selection of long Comme des Garcons wallets for $139, two Proenza Schouler bags for $969, two Loeffler Randall bags, and some assorted summer hats, silk scarves, and little clutches.
Staffers are concerned they'll actually sell out of merch before the sale ends and because this is a store sale, there's no extra inventory, back stock, or restocking going on. If what you've read above sounds tempting, you might want to get there ASAP—the store will reopen Saturday at 11am.
