We just got back from the Barneys Warehouse Sale and the verdict is this: you can find some great deals, but you'll have to dig. This is not a stop-by-on-your-lunch-hour sale. The majority of the prices so far are what we saw in the stores during their recent sale, but we spotted a lot of stuff we didn't see in the Madison Avenue store. There's all seasons here and almost all sizes.
Unfortunately, the shoe section is small. It could be the space is so much bigger that it just appears that way, but most of the guys were saying the shoes aren't worth it this season. There are sizes 7-13, and if you look for the racks tucked right behind the wall, there are some good deals, like Prada loafers for $149, Margiela metallic high tops for $199, and some Alejandro Ingelmo shiny high tops for $199. When we were leaving the shoes looked extremely picked through.
Next to the shoes is the blue star area that contains the deals that are 75% off the last marked price. This looked like everything that didn't sell at the last sale. In here you'll find swim suits, shorts, pants, button ups, sweaters, suiting, and even leathers. We saw an entire rack of Woolrich heavy down coats with fur trim for $99.75 instead of $750. In the other outerwear area, we found a quilted Philip Lim for $159, a John Varvatos leather button up for $317 (marked down from $998) and a cool Prada overcoat for $999 instead of $4,100.
Pants have sizes 28-42. In the denim section, we saw some Levi's Made & Crafted jeans going for $39 (which normally were $225), Rag & Bone for $59 (instead of $185) and Armani marked down to $319 from $529. There's a whole table of corduroys that icncluded Rag & Bone pairs for $60 (instead of $185) and some James Perse styles marked down to $107 from $225. There's a small rack of swimsuits and shorts that had a lot of James Perse sweat shorts for $77.
Sweaters and knits range from smalls to extra extra large sizes. We pulled a Dries Van Noten striped crew for $69 (originally at $205), a Vince sweater for $84 down from $195 and an Amarni tan knit for $179 (which was once $395). Tees and polos take up only two racks and contained nothing special. There weren't a lot of button ups but we did spot a Gitman Bros. for $77 and a Michael Bastian with bib detail for $159, which was $325.
Accessories looked like a large section, but upon closer inspection it was only a few options repeated over and over again. We did manage to find a Jack Spade packable tote for $59, Gant sunglasses for going for $49 instead of $195, and some Dries Van Noten printed scarves for $179 instead of $595. There was also a case of leather wallets and card holders staring at $29.
The suits and dress shirt area takes up one fourth of the sale space. The dress shirt sizes are 14.5 through 17. In the ties, we saw Dries Van Noten options for $59 (were $185).
There are two fitting rooms: one for ladies and one for guys. The new space is large enough for everyone to shop without feeling cramped. The staff is super helpful. The cash wrap line was going fast. Cash and credit accepted. We noticed a lot of merchandise not tagged or marked down, which you can take up one of the two customer service desks and they will look up the price and tag it for you.—Mickey Sery
