Williamburg's H.W. Carter & Sons Is Changing Its Identity

New, 2 comments

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

A tipster wrote in to let us know that H.W. Carter & Sons, located on Williamsburg's blossoming North 6th Street, is rebranding to Gentry (noun: people of gentle birth, good breeding, or high social position). The store's PR confirms that it is "in the process of changing a few things, including its name. It is now called Gentry, but it won't be fully re-launched for a couple months."

The store is less than a year old, having opened its doors in December. Responses to the massive menswear shop drew mixed reactions, including a scathing review from The Times.
