Trainer Chelsea Dornan has been in the fitness industry full time for the past two years, but her love for athleticism started way before that. Growing up in Australia, she was on swim and cross-country teams, played touch football, netball, and softball, and spent a lot of time in the water kayaking and body surfing. You can find her at Uplift Studios, a women's-only boutique fitness studio that offers two signature classes, one-on-one training sessions, and private events for bachelorette parties and birthdays called Workout & Wine. After the jump, Chelsea explains why women should embrace lifting weights.
What made you get into the fitness industry?
I've always had a love for fitness, but I didn't originally plan for it to be my full-time job. I have a strong passion for the environment, and used to work for the Environmental Protection Agency in Australia. After moving to NYC, I gravitated toward the fitness industry and found a real passion for it.
I love learning about the body and movement, and I really enjoy working one-on-one with people and watching them progress and become stronger and more confident through exercise. My passion for fitness has now become my life. And let me tell you, I can kick some serious butt!
What classes do you teach?
I teach a strength and conditioning class called Uplifting-Strength. It's a total body sculpting class using free weights, body weight, and bands. I love this class because it's back-to-basics weight training: women can sometimes by intimidated or turned off by lifting, and I'm able to show them that not only is it fun, but it's also a necessary part of health and fitness. The best part is the full-on sweat these women get after training for an hour. In my book, the sweatier the better.
Describe your training style.
I'm definitely tough. If you come to work out with me, you are going to WORK. However, I have a laid-back way of pushing you. I am not a yeller, but I will motivate you, push you, and make you laugh all at the same time. I have a strong Australian accent and it seems to amuse clients when I say things like "cardio bursts", "four" and "ass".
Tell us a fun fact about you.
I crush "This Is How We Do It" by Montel Jordan at karaoke. My favorite food is mac and cheese (and I sometimes dream about it). I often count out loud and crack myself up in my sleep.
