William Miller has been a trainer for the past six years, which includes three in New York City and three in Boston. He's been with Crunch since 2010, where he lends his fitness expertise to a wide range of clients—from those with injuries who need corrective exercise work to men and women just looking to beef up. He describes his training style as "versatile and well-rounded," and says: "I pride myself on that! I can take a large multitude of clients and work with them and their individual fitness goals." After the jump, he talks a bit about how to achieve those goals.
What made you want to become a trainer?
I used to be very skinny growing up—I was 135 lbs at 6 ft tall at 21, and when I was 22 I decided to join a gym and change that. (My friends used to tease me because I was so skinny. I would never take my shirt off because I was embarrassed.) I started working out and noticed changes in my body, and it really took over me. It was something that became a huge part of my lifestyle. I would train some of my friends just to help, and it was really enjoyable that I could help people and make them feel better about themselves.
At that time I was going to school to be a radiologist. It was what I wanted to do, but I felt like it wasn't my calling. I stopped taking classes and I became a certified trainer, and worked out of Gold's Gym and Work Out World in New Bedford, Massachusetts. I felt like I wanted to pursue more modeling and acting, so I moved to New York. I had a friend that trained at Crunch and she said it was awesome, so I had an interview and I was hired in September 2010. It really is the best job in the world! I come to work in sweats or shorts and I'm comfortable all day, doing a job that I absolutely love!
In addition to training, do you teach any classes?
I don't usually teach classes, but I have taught an abs class. I get shy when I'm around a large group of people and I have to speak aloud in front of them!
Tell us some fun facts about you.
I'm a neat freak and very coordinated—I know when something is moved or misplaced. I'm very meticulous when it comes to things like that. And I love Superman. Ever since I was a kid I idolized him, and even had the PJ's with the velcro cape!
