The gem of the Diamond District is filling up fast. More than 80 percent of the three-story shopping center inside the International Gem Tower has been leased out in the past three months, according to The Real Deal. Completion is near for the 34-story tower, of which the higher floors will be filled with jewelry company offices, and it should be open to the public by the spring of 2014.

This will be the city's first marketplace-style outlet for diamonds and precious gems, where vendors will occupy 115-foot to 360-foot stalls. The state-of-the-art facility will include security features such as "software that recognizes aberrant behavior via surveillance camera." We'd expect nothing less for where a girl's best friend is sold.—Laura Gurfein
