We're Convinced This Self-Tanner Actually Improves Our Skin

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Today's pick comes from Racked SF editor Kristen Philipkoski.

Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha-Beta Glow Pads, $18 for a pack of 10 at Sephora

I've already outed myself as a self-tanner junkie, so it won't be too surprising that I have more than one product in my arsenal. I exfoliate my face a lot, so I find it difficult to maintain a tanned glow on my visage for any period of time. Regular self-tanners can also make my face feel oily and pore-clogged.

I discovered a solution when I received free samples of the Alpha Beta Glow Pad from Dr. Dennis Gross. This single-serving pad not only imparts a lovely, streakless tan, but it also contains alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids that exfoliate, tighten pores, and reduce blackheads—basically the opposite of what can happen with other self-tanners. It even helps fade sunspots, and it doesn't have much of an odor, which is exactly what you want in a sunless tanner.
