DNAinfo has published an interview with Billy Solmaz, the manager of the gourmet deli that's getting squeezed out and replaced by J.Crew. Pacific Green Gourmet has resided at 151 Court Street for the past 13 years, and according to the article, it was told just three weeks ago that it would have to move out by the end of the year.
Solmaz explained, "We are trying to negotiate with the landlord. He just wants to give the place to a big corporation." DNAinfo adds that "the landlord has not discussed his plans for the building with Solmaz but mentioned there were offers on the table." They also report that Solmaz is willing to beat the highest bid, "but their landlord has not budged."
Regarding J.Crew's choice of location, one of our own commenters responded in our last post: "I love J.Crew. As a long-time dweller in this hood, I feel they should have moved to the Fulton Mall area, not Court Street. Seriously, right across from Trader Joe's? So ridiculous."
And another: "I am a 25-year resident of Boerum Hill and shop at both J.Crew (hello, extra 30% off sale price) and Pacific Green. I agree J. Crew should have been placed on Fulton or Atlantic Ave. Pushing out Pacific Green??? So sad."
And one more: "I love J.Crew but this location means my favorite deli is going out of business and having a J.Crew nearby is not worth it. It's sad when needed services like a gourmet deli have to be sacrified for a chain store that we have access to a few subway stops away. Not good."
