Williamsburg market Artist & Fleas is returning to Chelsea Market this season after a successful summer kick-off week in May. Though the pop-up "market within a market" doesn't officially open until tomorrow, we got a sneak peak this afternoon. And though many of the vendors still have a lot of setting up to do, they promise to be ready in time for the opening.
Artist and Fleas is aiming to be "a destination for discovering what's new, what's cool," said co-founder Ronen Glimer, and they're excited to bring the W'burg flavor back to this neighborhood. "We're definitely not a craft fair," he added, hoping that people will think of their offerings as urban folk art. To that end, the space on the corner of Tenth Avenue and 15th Street has been decorated with customized graffiti art—Glimer said that these artists used to tag the High Line across the street.
There are currently 30 vendors at the market, and new ones will rotate through every week, meaning you'll want to stop by more than just once this summer. Some of the vendors we saw today include Marina Pecoraro, offering jewelry like knuckle rings and delicate bracelets, and a Churoncalla, which has baubles made out of things like typewriter keys, license plates, and cutlery. Check out the rest of the offerings for yourself, starting tomorrow at 10am.—Laura Gurfein
