Follow the Signs to Rogan, Loomstate, Surf Bazaar, Ulla Johnson

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

If you follow the signs spelling out "SAMPLE SALE" in neon tape along Bowery and Bond Street and you'll find exactly that for Rogan, Loomstate, Surf Bazaar, and Ulla Johnson in the basement level of what used to be the Rogan store. If you've been on that corner recently, you know the signage is necessary—the building is now shrouded in scaffolding and plastic tarps. But don't let that deter you from picking through some great items from this sale.

All Ulla Johnson merchandise is individually tagged. We saw sweater-like coverups starting at $50, and a particularly cute cream-colored knit sweater with an open back for $140. Tees and henleys start at $80, while breezy summer tops start at $50 and maxi dresses are $135 and $145. There are also accessories—belts for $35 and $65, scarves for $30, and python sandals for $220.

For Surf Bazaar, we saw a lot of breezy basics in neutral colors with neon hems. Shoppers can find pricing info on the wall and on each rack. Backless tees for $20 made us think of warm days on the beach, along with maxi tunics for $75 and mid tunics for $60. We also saw great tees and tanks, with short versions going for $40 and longer ones for $50.

Rogan and Loomstate are the only brands offering men's clothing at this sale, albeit a small selection. Sort through boxes of Rogan basic tees for $30, or check out Loomstate pants for $100. There are also some plaid button-downs for $60. On the women's side, we liked a white trench with cartoonish buttons for $90 and a top with a sea anemone-esque print with a woven back for $75. (There are matching pants, too!) It's helpful to know that prices are the same for both men's and women's items—just follow the chart on the wall.

Greg Hahn of Rogan told us that he'll likely drop prices for Rogan and Loomstate items later today&, but he's not sure if the same will apply for Ulla and Surf. But since the former brands have the more expensive finds, that's the discount that matters. This sale runs through Friday.—Laura Gurfein
