Comparing the Merch at the Alice + Olivia Sample Sale in Soho

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

A second location for the Alice + Olivia sample sale is taking place in Soho starting today at 10am. Doors opened yesterday evening for a VIP preview, but they weren't checking the guest list, making it basically open to the public. It was also pretty quiet, probably due to the poor weather.

The selections between the two locations are close but definitely not identical. After you check in your bag, you'll enter a semi-spacious loft filled with colorful garments similar to the ones we saw at the Midtown sale. Prices are the same. Everything is also organized by size. In the back, you'll find some footwear, knits, and accessories.

First of, you will NOT find any samples here, and the assortment of knits and shoes is slim. There are different styles of wedges, pumps, and flats, though, but they're more limited in sizes for some styles. There are no boots at all.

Some shoe highlights include cute flats that come in leopard print, polka dots, and black and white stripes. Many of the shoes on display are currently on sale on the A&O website, but they don't come close to the sample sale's prices of $49 (for flats) and $79 (for heels).

The selection of belts appears to be different as well, but there are only a couple of varieties. There are no leather handbags at this sale, but there are beaded bags going for $69. You'll find purple floral triangle bikinis going for $49 that are different from the bikinis we spotted back at 260 Fifth.

In conclusion, although most of the pieces you'll see at 72 Greene Street are also avaiable at 260 Fifth Avenue, there are definitely some items that you will only find at the Midtown location, and some only at the Soho one. The sample racks at 260 Fifth are definitely a huge plus. Is it worth checking out both? You could probably pass if you've already hit up the Midtown sale, but if you like the shoes in the photo gallery above (or just so happent to be in the neighborhood), it might be worth the trip.—Hsini
