Resale chainlet Beacon's Closet is helping raise money for an employee to have gender reassignment surgery. Diana Tourjee, who identifies as a transgender woman, has worked at the Williamsburg location of the buy-sell-trade store for three years. When her insurance provider denied to cover the surgery costs, she took the matter into her own hands, launching a $22,000 campaign on IndieGoGo.
Beacon's is pitching in by throwing in gift cards with donations to Diana's cause. A $25 donation earns a $10 gift card to the resale store, $150 gets you get a $20 gift card as well as a row boat date with Diana in Central Park, and $250 wins a dinner date —"You and I will eat something cute like sushi... Please pick this one I really want to get sushi w you."—and a $30 gift card to Beacon's Closet. Other donation gifts include a Hot Topic-inspired t-shirt that reads, "I'm out of bed and dressed and got a sex change what more do you want?" (pictured at right). At the very least, reward the girl for her sense of humor.
