The Botkier Sample Sale May Be Small, But It's Filled With Bags

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

The Botkier sample sale, tucked in the back of Chelsea Market, is filled with neatly organized tables holding rows of the brand's iconic handbags. Although we made it to the sale at the height of lunch hour (it started at 10am), the crowd was manageable and there were still plenty of purses sitting in color-coordinated rows.

The sale offers handbags at up to 60% off original prices, and a quick survey showed that they had sold out of samples that morning. No need to worry, though—the staff already put in an order to the office to replenish supplies, and there were still plenty of standbys and staples like the Ludlow tote ($265, originally $545). The small bags start at $50 a pop, and go up to $225 for larger items.

The Armory satchels and the smaller, Valentina cross-body purses greet shoppers as they enter the sale. The Valentina hipster is marked down to $115 (originally $195) and comes in neutrals, pastels, and neon brights. If you're looking for something to add a bit of sheen to your daily commute, be sure to look for the popular Wanderlust shopper in metallic. They're marked down to $150 from $245.

The staff is uber-friendly, and although the space is small, the sale's organization and relatively gentle crowd make it worth checking out. It continues through Thursday, which gives you plenty of time to head over.—Cady Lang
