Don't Expect a Steal at the Aloha Rag Sample Sale

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

We arrived at the Aloha Rag sample sale twenty minutes after it opened, and there was a small line of about a dozen people waiting to get in. It took another twenty to get in, and once inside, the environment was very calm and rather stark—with the large space not terribly full of clothes. As per previous Aloha Rag sales, it was mostly pieces from the in-house line. The advertisement for the sale mentioned Cèline, Balmain, and Alexander Wang, but those pieces must have been immediately snapped up, as the labels were nowhere in sight.

What is there, though, are plenty of current pieces that are still in store elsewhere. The sale almost seemed like a combination sample sale and a markdowns sale, so it was neat to poke through (or a pain, depending on how much you had hoped to spend). The guides on the wall tell you that based on the color of the sticker, the price is up to 75% off or more most pieces were either 30% or 40% off.

Accessories are few and far between, but we did spot a beige/bronze PS1 for $1,396.50, and a large brown suede PS1 for $1,197. Relatively good prices, considering how infrequently the neutral colors go on sale. The shoe selection is underwhelming, with maybe a dozen styles total.

For women, there are Hervé Léger bandage dresses marked down up to 40% off. Spotted was a scoop-neck tank bandage dress marked down to $644 from $990. There are current Acne pieces, including the currency print line, for 30% off. You can also score some Acne Flex jeans for $140.

Carven sat right next to the Acne, as well as Saint Laurent, both 30% off. There is also a table of denim, with Aloha Rag denim coming in at a low price of $24. A myriad of 30% to 40% off other Aloha Rag pieces—from light jackets and dresses to super basic basics—fill up the other racks. On the two racks right next to the door are the samples, which seem to be mostly women's pieces and are upwards of 75% off their original prices.

The men's selection is a little more exciting: Margiela, Jil Sander, and more. Margiela's basics are marked down 30% to 40% off, with a short-sleeve tee for $161 (from $230) and chinos for $438 (from $625). Sidian, Ersatz, & Vanes have a few button-downs for around $182 (originally $280), all with long-sleeves but in year-round fabrics. Everything else except Aloha Rag is 30% off. So: Jil Sander suits can be had for $985, and there was one Raf Simons sweater that disappeared almost immediately.

You'll find Band of Outsiders oxfords and spring flannels, with the flannels priced at $182, and some short-sleeve shirts and sleek shorts from 3.1 Phillip Lim. The newest iteration of the Raf Simons x Fred Perry polos hang out next to a ton of current Acne denim (the Vega, Roc, and Ace). Aloha Rag and Aloha Rag Surplus were scattered amongst everything, with light jackets, suits, track pants, and canvas jackets hovering around 40% off.

They won't be replenishing their stock, so whatever is out is what's there. For additional info, see the gallery above and the dealfeed below.—Dana Melanz
