Welcome to Shoe Week: a five-day celebration of all things footwear, from the best new arrivals to our favorite places to shop for heels, flats, and everything in between.
It's a tough job hand selecting designer shoes to fill one of the city's best shoe salons, but somebody's got to do it—which is where Dayna Ziegler, the VP and Divisional Merchandising Manager of Women's Shoes at Saks Fifth Avenue, comes in. In honor of Shoe Week, we caught up with her to pick her brain on some seasonally-important shoe topics: like, what does she think of extreme gladiator sandals? What are shoppers currently going crazy over? And what in the hell kind of shoes can a woman wear from 9am to 5pm, Monday through Friday?
What categories tend to do the best amongst Saks shoppers in NYC?
This season, our customer is responding to the resurgence of the stiletto. She's also looking for fashion on a mid-heel.
What designers do you always tend to gravitate toward?
We look for designers that will speak best to our customer. She's confident that we will offer her the latest and best fashion of the season.
What are some of your favorite picks from this spring?
Summer booties, single sole pumps, and flat espadrilles.
Anything you're really excited about for fall?
Single sole, pointy toe booties. Skate shoes, and d'Orsay pumps and flats.
What have been some of the biggest surprises in your buys?
The craze over PVC and lucite heels.
When you notice a new shoe silhouette coming up, do you have to wait for your customer to be ready for it?
Our customer is well educated, and wants the new trends right away.
What are your thoughts on one of spring's ubiquitous trends: extreme, knee-high gladiator sandals?
Love the trend, but personally not my style.
If you're working a full day in a pair of heels, what brand/style would you choose?
My go-to would be a Blahnik BB pump.
