Last night, we checked out the Scotch & Soda sample sale at 260 Fifth Avenue, for a sneak peak at the merchandise that would be available today—and found that this is a real, legit sample sale. What this means is that everything at this sale is an actual sample. There are both pros and cons in a case such a this.
Let's get the cons out of the way first. Basically, all of the clothing is sample size, which means that every item is either a two or a four if you're a lady, and a medium/large and 32 or 33 if you're a male. Also, there are only a couple of pieces in each style, so if you see something you like, you really can't hesitate because it's most likely the only of its kind.
And now for the pros. Being that there are only a couple pieces in each style, this makes room for a lot more variety. There must be hundreds of different pieces out on the racks, and many are one-of-a-kind. If you do find something that you truly love, you'll be only one of two New Yorkers wearing it this summer.
Another pro: samples are always priced lower than overstock, hence the pretty fair prices. The most expensive items are leather, which were rather scarce to begin with. If you do find the one leather jacket we saw, it will cost you $150, and it's really flippin cool. Other prices include $20 for tees, $35 for skirts and shorts, $40 for other tops and dresses, $45 for pants, $50 for sweaters, $100 for light jackets and blazers, and $125 for heavier jackets and down vests.
As for the accessories, there's a long table filled with ties, belts, scarves, hats, bags, and jewelry. We spotted some really interesting cuff links for $15, and some great bags and backpacks for $50. Aside from the scarves in the bins on the table, you'll also find a wall filled with a bunch of them in perfect spring prints for just $20. We advise you to tackle this area first, simply because the prices are super great.
Overall, the clothing is really cool, exactly the boho chic styles you'd expect to find at a Scotch & Soda sale. I you prefer to take a risk, wait until the weekend when the chance of further price reductions comes into play. All the stock is out, so what you see is what you get—and of the course everything is final sale.
