Defying all logic, the corner of West Fourth Street and Sixth Avenue has found a way to not be a fashion destination. Near the IFC Theatre, boatloads of transit, and a cross-section of well-funded NYU students and West Village denizens, the row should flourish with boutiques—à la neighboring Bleecker Street—yet somehow has remained primarily occupied by businesses with the word "fantasy" in their names.
That should change soon, however: 333 Sixth Avenue, which houses Papaya Dog, recently shuttered porn shop Fantasy Parlor, and Crazy Fantasy Tattoo has been bought up by a developer who hopes to bring in national chains like Victoria's Secret (hmm...) or Dylan's Candy Bar.
Unlike a lot of real estate development sagas, locals are elated by the sale and the tides of change. Community Board 2 chair David Gruber called the porn shop "the bane of that area for some time," and is relieved that the building was sold. "It's time to clean up that part of the Village."
Similarly, the executive director of the Village Alliance said the adult shop "lent an unsavory air" to the corner. They're in luck, because another major adult emporium has been bought up: Fantasy World (the one Zac Efron was spotted at) was purchased in February, and the real estate exec responsible wants to see "something along the lines of Nespresso" in its place.
