Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

When walking into the annual Zero + Maria Cornejo sample sale yesterday mid-afternoon, we were surprised and delighted that we didn't have to wait in line to check our bags or fight through crowds of shoppers to get to the merchandise. The sale was surprisingly quiet, nicely organized and the staff was attentive.

The merchandise didn't disappoint either: we found the best deals on the two racks labeled damaged/samples. Prices ranged from $50 to $250 for a variety of sweater styles, dress pants and a few pairs of shorts and knit dresses, most of which were not damaged at all. The best deal on this rack was a pair of jacquard striped shorts for $75.

If you want to skip over spring all together and head straight to the beach, then you'll be happy to shop the bikini separates and one-piece bathing suits priced $60 to $75 in sizes 0-10. The small selection of silk dresses for $300 and tunics for $150 were signature styles worth the higher prices. According to the sales associates, they won't be restocking the sale, so get there early because the selection was dwindling when we left around 4pm yesterday.

Be sure to wear your best sample-sale appropriate under layers, as there were no fitting rooms, just four awkwardly short mirrors placed in the corners. You won't have to worry about this if you're simply shopping for accessories and footwear, which was abundant at the sale. The $75 accessories bins were jam-packed with knit and printed silk scarves and a variety of belts.

An amazing selection of women's shoes in all sizes flanked the windows at the back of the sale, with sandals from pre-fall 2013 priced at $200, and flat over the knee suede boots for $400. The box of sample shoes marked $150 was filled with sandals and heels. The Zero + Maria Cornejo sale shared the space with another sample sale, featuring a variety of shoe styles from Repetto, all priced at $100, as well as a small selection of Dieppa Restrepo for $150 to $200.

If you're feeling extra spendy, then head to the outerwear rack where we spotted an amazing angular white leather jacket for $700 and shearling coats guaranteed to keep you warm for $1,500. There was also a small selection for your man, featuring button down shirts, tank tops and a few shoe styles.

Bottom line: it's worth the trip downtown, especially because this sale is only once a year. The sale wraps up today at 6pm; see the dealfeed below for additional info.—Christina DeSmet
