This OCC Lip Tar Was Inspired by a Transgender Store Employee

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

January Hunt is an employee at the Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics store on the Lower East Side, who's also saving money to pay for her male-to-female gender reassignment surgery. When her colleagues at the OCC store found out about January's mission, they offered to help her raise the cash. To do so, they created a limited-edition version of their famous lip tar: a bright pink shade named January Rising, and earmarked proceeds to go toward January's surgery fund.

"OCC is great ... [they're] producing a product with actual ethics in mind," January told "It's nice to be part of that exciting growth and hopefully bring more trans awareness to the world through my cause." If you want to get one of the $25 lip tars for yourself, you'll have to head to the Ludlow Street store, because it won't be sold on OCC's website. The other way to get one is to donate directly to January's Indiegogo fund.
