We stopped by the friends and family portion of the Rag & Bone sample sale this morning, and if the line outside was any indication of what's to come when the doors officially open to the public at 10:30am tomorrow, then you're in for a crowded and hectic shopping experience. As expected, the door policy for today's sale is lax, and the general public is allowed to enter. (Sale ends at 8pm.)
As always, the sale is stocked with wear-now merchandise for both men and women, with price lists posted in the corresponding areas, so be sure to double-check the signs. Divided between two levels, the menswear and denim bar are on the lower level and womenswear is on the upper level. Most styles are available in multiple sizes, except for women's sweaters, which were primarily smaller sizes.
For the ladies, you will be happy to know that the shoe station was well stocked with sizes and styles, from quilted loafers to black pony Newbury boots priced between $150-$295. Small and large Pilot bags for $250-$350 are scattered around the accessory shelves among the pinstripe alpaca scarves, iPad cases, and wallets (all for $65).
Outerwear includes parkas with quilted lining, classic pea coats with leather details, and oversized wool coats for $350-$450. Fleece lined jean jackets, navy pinstripe blazers, and textured bomber jackets are $195-$250. Leather pieces run high on the price scale, with leather shorts for $250, leather skirts for $350, and leather pants for $595—although the quilted leather pants we saw were splurge worthy.
The denim bar offers mostly skinny silhouettes in an array of blue washes, a camouflage print, and white denim with black panels for $98. Jeans with leather details are $150.
There are separate fitting rooms for men and women, with a maximum of six items at a time and insistence to leave your Rag and Bone accessories and shoes outside. We only saw one mirror outside the dressing room with women trying on coats among their piles of merchandise.
For men, the outerwear selection is great, with wardrobe staples including long army green military coats, anoraks with fur trimmed hoods, and navy peacoats with shearling collars, all priced between $350 and $450. There's no shortage of men's leather jackets, from classic black jackets and mineral green bombers to a red and navy moto jacket for $595. Shawl collar cardigans and pullover sweaters for $150 were neatly stacked on tables among the racks of outerwear. Denim is $98.
Men's shoes are limited, but boots, brogues, and boat shoes are $195, while sneakers are only $125, with some sizes available in select styles. Hand tailored suit jackets ($595) and pants ($195) from the Greenfield collection make an appearance in black and grey. Button up shirts ($98) with checks, plaids, and stripes fill the center table of the men's section. Solid styles in chambray, flannel, and light weight cotton are also stacked high in most sizes.
As usual, this sale get insanely crowded, so allow enough time and patience to deal with the mob scene. The sale will run from 10:30am to 8pm tomorrow through Friday, from 11am to 6pm on Saturday, and from 10am to 3pm on Sunday.—Christina DeSmet
